Obituary of Virginia Hubbard

Virginia Deane (Ginny) Hubbard, age 89, passed into the arms of Jesus from skilled nursing in Tucson, Arizona on Friday, March 22, 2024. Born November 11, 1934, in Hannibal, Missouri, she was a wonderful person, loving and loyal and kind. She earned her Bachelor of Education degree at Truman State University (at the time it was Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College), then decided that teaching elementary school children in Arizona was her calling. She moved to Tucson in 1960. In 1967, her parents joined her there.

Ginny taught First Grade for 30 years in the Tucson School District and was known for her love of reading, which she passed on to many of her students.

Ginny had a passion for many things, in addition to teaching. One had only to enter her home to see her souvenirs from traveling around the globe with her teacher friends and her travel club, her love for plants, and her love of animals. She traveled to more than 50 countries. Loving the flora and fauna of the Tucson area, she had perpetual memberships to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and the Reid Park Zoo. Her pets included cats, dogs, a desert tortoise and a pigeon, that she lavished love upon. Anyone who spent time with Ginny would have known her love for her church family, the Methodist Women’s ministry, and the music of hymns. She gained an in-depth knowledge of several books of the Bible through Precept Bible Studies. She often hosted holiday gatherings in her home. She also enjoyed the symphony, traveling theater, and opera.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia True Hubbard and David Dean Hubbard.

Ginny is survived by four cousins who knew her as their aunt or great-aunt: Cindy Lilly Carr (Mark), Stephen Lilly, Paul Lilly (Eileen), and Rebekah Lilly, all from Texas. Ginny is also survived by cousins Jean Womack of Texas, Jerry Hubbard (Sue) of Oregon, Jeff Hubbard (Sharon) of Texas, Janice Hubbard Rupp (Richard) of Missouri, Karen Madden Bellamy of Illinois, Marvin Madden (Joanne) of North Dakota, Carolyn Phoebus of Florida, Charlet Knox Quay, of Missouri, and other relatives, many wonderful friends at CCUMC, and long-time friends she taught with.

The love, compassion and care provided by Laurie R. and her family, for over 20 years, will always be remembered with gratitude.

Additionally, the family would like to thank Mary M. and other private caregivers who cared for and demonstrated their love for Ginny, as well as the many others who assisted Ginny over the years with her house, her pets, and her yard.

Ginny’s funeral will be at 10AM on April 6, 2024 at her church. Burial will be in June 2024 at GrandView Cemetery in Hannibal, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Ginny with gifts to Christ Church United Methodist of Tucson, Arizona (ccumtucson.org), or Precept Bible Studies (www.Precept.org).

Ginny will be greatly missed.
