Obituary of Barbara Sue McCune

Barbara Sue McCune passed away peacefully at the age of 61 on March 3, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona. She is survived by her brothers, Dale (Cynthia) McCune of Tucson and Carl (Sally) McCune of Battle Creek, Michigan along with six nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patricia Yellig.

Barbara was born on August 24th, 1962, in Valparaiso, Indiana. She grew up in Chesterton, Indiana and graduated from Chesterton High School in 1980. She attended Manchester College for two years before transferring to Ball State University where she graduated in 1985. Barbara moved to Tucson, Arizona because of her asthma and allergies. She worked in early childhood education, then as a church secretary and later as a home healthcare provider.

In 1996, Barbara’s mother, Betty McCune, moved to Tucson and they bought a house together in east Tucson. Betty and Barbara travelled back to Indiana and Ohio to attend many family reunions; family was very important to Barbara. She compiled many memories of her grandmother Frances Baker and other family members. Eventually Barbara became the sole caregiver for her mother up until her death in 2017 at the age of 97.

Barbara loved the warm weather and scenery of Arizona, particularly the Grand Canyon which she visited many times. She was especially fond of all the cats and dogs she had over the years, with her cat Tana and dog Opie being her favorites. Barbara listened to Celtic music and enjoyed any episode of Dr. Who. Barbara was a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren in Michigan City, Indiana and then in Tucson. Later she worshipped with the Shalom Mennonite Fellowship in Tucson. Barbara will be missed by those who knew her but will be confident in her joining the church triumphant.
