Obituary of Phyllis Carol Gregory

GREGORY, Phyllis Carol, died on July 31, 2016, in Tucson. Born January 16, 1937 in Kennonsburg, Ohio, youngest daughter of Bert and Mary Jane Lashley, Carol's family moved to Colorado in 1944 for health reasons. She moved to Tucson in 1968, working successively at Kitt Peak National Observatory, ASARCO, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatories. A generation of the world's visiting astronomers will remember Carol's helping hand as they came to Tucson to unravel the Universe, or not-so-gentle hand if they tried to break in on her bosses' time. She unknowingly met her future son-in-law as an impressionable young 19-year-old astronomy student on his first trip to Kitt Peak, but did not need to pay him much attention for another seven years. She traveled widely but called Tucson home for the rest of her life, and played tennis well into her 70s come cold or (especially) heat. She is survived by her daughter, Terri Keel and son-in-law, William Keel, both of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; grandsons, Christopher Keel of Tuscaloosa and Nathan Keel of Arlington, Texas and sisters, Geneva McLaughlin of Arvada, Colorado, and Wilda Reich of Boulder, Colorado. She was predeceased by her parents, sister, Wanda and brother, Frank. Carol was a longtime member of Tucson Baptist Temple, and served for many years on the managing board of her housing co-op.
