Obituary of Stephen Michael Evangelist

On Friday, August 19, 2016, Stephen passed into his Eternal Peace after a long struggle against several serious illnesses. He was preceded by his loving parents, Sam and Marion Evangelist, who were there to meet him, along with his recently departed brother-in-law, Tony Desino. He is survived and dearly missed by his twin sister, Stephanie (Desino), sister, Marion (Marinetti) , and her husband Dwain Marinetti, nephew, Jason (Kelly) Desino and nieces, Brenda Desino and Marsha Desino, many extended family, and friends. Stephen Michael Evangelist was born on September 26, 1948 in Rochester, New York. He attended public schools and soon found that he had a strong interest in sports and learning. In high school he played almost all the competitive team sports, excelled in basketball and football, and at the same time, maintained high grades in his academic studies. His sisters recall many times when "big brother" Stephen would step in and protect them from the inevitable threats at school. Stephen continued to play basketball in college, but he enjoyed reading and studying even more than sports. He always was an avid sports fan, but learning became his primary pursuit. He joined the U.S. Army Reserves while working at the local newspaper and earning a Bachelors Degree in Economics. Soon after moving to Arizona, Stephen joined the regular Army and was trained as a medic. He worked in an Army hospital where he cared for soldiers and veterans. After leaving the U.S. Army, Stephen continued his studies, earning a second Bachelors Degree. He also earned an Associates Degree in Business and several Certificates in other areas of interest. Stephen lived a quiet and simple life. He often would help people who were in need, whether the need was food, or shelter, or just an ear to hear their problems. He lived honorably and bravely, sometimes having to fight against things he could not fully understand, and sometimes having to suffer injustices from people who didn't understand him. Finally the fight is over. Be at peace, Stephen. Be at Peace. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the veterans support organization of your choosing.
