Obituary of Bernard Martin Augustyn

Bernard M. "Gus" Augustyn Army Sergeant Major Sergeant Major Augustyn was a native of Lowville, NY. He served in the Army for 20 years, including tours in Okinawa, Korea, Germany, and Viet Nam. His final military. assignment was with the Military Office at the White House. His honors included a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and two Army Commendation Medals. He retired from the Army in 1973. He served a second career as a weapons specialist with the U.S. Secret Service at the Secret Service training facility in Laurel, .MD. He retired from the Secret Service in 1994. Sgt. Maj. Augustyn was a graduate of Capitol Institute of Technology with a bachelors degree in electronics engineering technology. An avid "ham radio" operator, Sgt. Maj. Augustyn was also a member of the Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS). Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Teresa Fumi Arakaki Augustyn;four sisters, Mary Podolski of Lowville, NY, Clara Kovacs of Croghan, NY, Martha Lewandowski of Lowville, NY.
