You are so missed! Nothing is the same. You and mom built a solid, sound foundation of our family. We are all there for mom and Jen, as well as for each other. When we all gather, we have a remembrance of good times. Still alive in our hearts. Until we see you again....

Honoring Don Proulx, 1945-2018, for his service to rural health in Arizona
Donald E. Proulx
former Associate director of Arizona AHEC and former staff member of the Arizona Rural Health Office, passed away on Oct. 21, 2018. The Arizona Center for Rural Health wishes to extend its sincere condolences to his family and recognize his service to rural and underserved communities in the state.
Don Proulx was a valued colleague of Andy Nichols, founder of the Arizona Rural Health Office. He was tapped by Andy to head up a new AHEC in the Miami/Globe area, and then to preside over the Rural Health Office's Education Unit.
Don was featured prominently in the book, "Four Decades in the Desert: The University of Arizona's Center for Rural Health 1970-2015" by author Michael Joe Dupont, excerpted here:
“I invited Andy Nichols early on as a guest lecturer in my classes,” remembered Don Proulx, who was then Associate Dean of Health Sciences at Pima Community College, during a 2013 interview. Andy was interested in how our exchange program went, and after I invited him to my class, we hit it off. He was a true advocate of disadvantaged communities, and so we bonded because of my cross-border experiences. We were into the same things, and Andy was basically my counterpart at the University of Arizona in terms of community health."
"Don Proulx developed his devotion to what he calls “disenfranchised people” by the most organic of means. He lived it. “I was born poor,” he explained. …“Right now my interest is in promotoras, who are community health representatives. It’s actually a concept that came from Mexico, and these are people who are trusted members in their own neighborhoods. They’re helpers and promoters of good health, and they do a lot of home visits and work with their own people. I love the concept and the work is exceptionally good. Well, we didn't know what promotoras were back then, but growing up, I sure could have used one.” …“AHEC clicked for me because I was always interested in medicine,” Proulx explained. This was my opportunity to go into the Rural Health Office with Andy, and become an AHEC director, so I applied and the community steering committee selected me as founding director."
Below are some fond memories of Don from his UA colleagues:
Jill Guernsey de Zapien - So many folks at the Rural Health Office remember all the wonderful work that Don accomplished as the Assistant Director of the Arizona AHEC and indeed there was so much to remember! But I like to recall how passionate and committed Don was to community health workers! Don had a vision for building a strong CHW program with community colleges throughout the country and pioneered so much of what has become the recognized core competencies and skills of community health workers in our country. Today, his original JUMP START curriculum serves as the guiding force to almost all training programs for community health workers in our state. Don was an active member of our Arizona Community Health Worker Workforce Coalition and was delighted when a bill passed in the last legislative session recognizing voluntary certification of community health workers. He will be missed by so many, but his legacy with community health workers will live on.

So sad. Such a loss. But Don helps me remember the words of Eleanor Roosevelt - "Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart."
Rest in peace, my friend. I hope I can leave such an elegant memory as you have done for those we leave behind.

I want to echo some of the comments I've seen and send my condolences to Don's family and friends.
As a CHW I want to acknowledge and pay homage to Don as a true champion for CHWs who carried our torch into rooms and tables that many CHWs were not and was able to ensure that there was a seat-place for us!
I worked with Don on the CHW-NEC, C3 and on many local and national CHW initiatives over almost two decades, over those years my wife and I have either co-presented with or broke bread and hoisted a beverage with Don in over 10 states inn the US from Hawaii to Massachusetts and also over the boarder in Mexico!
Don you are missed and I want to be one of the first to ask all of us to think about how we can integrate some words about and a moment to observe Don's passing at two upcoming events where CHWs will come together, APHA Annual meeting and Unity.
Peace & Thanks from Durrell J. Fox -- CHW

Dear Terri,
I’m so sad to hear of your dad’s passing. He lived a full, rich life and contributed so much to our community and beyond. I so enjoyed working and laughing with him and learning from him.
Although I will miss being with you, family and friends to remember and honor Don, I will keep you all in my prayers.

We lost a great colleague and for many of us, a friend.
Don was the CHW-NEC Creator and Director and he was a valued consultant to the C3 Project among many projects.
He was truly determined to make life better for rural and marginalized communities and to support and promote CHWs to that end.
He will be missed.
May his memory be for a blessing.

One red hen, two cute ducks, three brown bear, four running hare..., the diarrhea song, our seventh grade science experiment on how to make beer (ok, it was really on the fermentation process, but what better way to teach seventh graders how it works? AND we got to try it!). These are only some of the memories I get to treasure and keep with me of a wonderful man, teacher, friend. A very kind person with a heart of gold who will forever have my respect. My deepest condolences to you all. May the love of the family and friends around bring you strength and the memories you have of your lives with him bring you peace. You will be in my prayers.

My sincere prayers go up for the family as you wrestle with this and grieve. A beautiful video tribute shows a touching side to Don. I worked with him several years ago for several years. He was always a fair man, a smart man and a funny man. He went to a basket ball shindig and brought me back a Sean Elliott shirt that I still have after all these years. I loved talking basket ball with him and debating the players.
The most memorable things he did were attached to the AHEC program and the Community Health Workers/Americorp programs. BUT, the one thing he would do for all the administrative support people was the biggest and sweetest thing (literally too) that he did. We would spend hours working overtime on grant submissions and at that time work on the many copies that we had to have made and put together right. To show his appreciation and to keep us working (LOL) he went and bought peanut M&Ms for all of us, and with that it would carry us through a long hard job and process. I always believed he and Nancy Collyer together came up with that reward, but it worked.
Don, you have done so much for the poverty level population to get health care to them, you will always be remembered how tireless you worked and how the slightest improvement made you push harder for reform. You will be so missed and it was a pleasure for being part of your life. See you in the next journey.
