Obituary of Robert E. Whalen

Robert E. Whalen, age 98, passed away peacefully in the wee hours of December 28, 2023, in Tucson. He was born on May 29, 1925, in Tucson.

Bob was a beloved father, brother, and friend. Family was everything to him, and he was known for his likable and insightful nature and his ever present sense of humor. He enjoyed engaging in meaningful conversations with his loved ones and friends. Bob had a passion for building and remodeling homes, camping, buying and selling vehicles, assembling model ships, and gardening. He was also an avid reader, particularly interested in history and politics. Throughout his life, he curated an impressive collection of musical recordings, adding his historical narrative to the mix.

Bob is survived by his two sons, Steven and Thomas Whalen, his daughter Kathleen Whalen, his sister Mary (Wendell) Herr, and his lady friend Becky Phillips. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 74 years, Dorothy Hughes Whalen, who passed away 2 1/2 years before him.

Bob attended Tucson High School and went on to earn a Masters in Education from the University of Arizona. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, engaging in combat in the Marshall Islands and in both the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific Theater. He was present for the historic raising of the U.S. flag on the recaptured Pacific Islands.

Throughout his career, Bob dedicated thirty years to education. He taught at Dunbar School and served as principal at Lizzy Brown, Brichta, and Sam Hughes, all within the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD).

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024,10:30 AM at Eastlawn, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Following the service, a 12:00 noon reception will take place at the Far Horizons East Clubhouse, located at 7570 E Speedway.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona or Habitat for Humanity in Bob's memory.

Bob Whalen will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His love for his family, dedication to education, and service to his country will be remembered and cherished forever.
