Obituary of Sam Arnold Westmoreland Jr.

Sam Arnold Westmoreland, Jr., 97, a long time resident of Tucson, Arizona, passed away in his home on February 5, 2023 of natural causes. Sam was born on November 25, 1925 to Sam and Julia Westmoreland in Lott Texas. After Sam graduated from high school, he served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He came home in 1946 and went on to study at Southwest Texas Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas. After graduating in 1949 with degrees in Mathematics & Chemistry Sam began a career in teaching. He obtained a Masters degree in 1961 studying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In 1953, Sam met the love of his life, Dolores Madero, while teaching in Edna, Texas. Sam and Dolores wed on November 25, 1954 and went on to have three children, Mark Westmoreland, Deborah Pollard and Randy Westmoreland; their spouses Jo Anna, Fergus and Jennie. In 1961, Sam and Dolores moved to Tucson, Arizona where Sam continued his teaching career teaching Math at Pueblo High School for 8 years. He moved to Cholla High School as the head of the Math department when it opened and discovered a new love of computers. He started the computer program at Cholla High School and later helped develop a high school program for Tucson and later, all of Arizona. He was with Tucson Unified School District One for 27 years and a teaching career of more than 34 years. In 1988, Sam retired and spent his time traveling the United States with his wife while continuing his discovered love of computers. Sam was predeceased by his wife Dolores who passed away in 2017. He is survived by his three children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
