Obituary of Eva P. Muñoz

Eva Portillo Muñoz, a long-time Tucsonan who spent a number of years living in the Midwest, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. She was 97 years old.

She was born July 13, 1925 in Balleza, Chihuahua, México, the sixth child to Erasmo Portillo Jurado and Josefa Villalobos Portillo. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Primitivo Portillo, Guadalupe Portillo Terrazas, Esther Portillo Meza, Romelia Portillo, Trinidad Portillo Muñoz, Ernestina Portillo Garcia, her nephew Roberto Garcia, and husband Edward Muñoz.

She is survived by her brother, Ernesto V. Portillo of Tucson.

She moved to Tucson to be with her parents who came to Tucson in 1956 and where her youngest brother, Ernesto, was living. In subsequent years she attended English classes in the evening at Safford School and worked during the day, including Walgreens downtown. In the mid-60s, Eva moved to the Midwest where her sisters Lupe and Titi (Ernestina) lived with their families. She lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and Pittsburg, Kansas. Eventually she moved back to Tucson and lived in Menlo Park next to her widowed mother.

Eva was a long-time member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and active in some of the church's groups and activities.

She is survived by her nieces Lupita Seward and Dorothy Terrazas, whom she doted on as her daughters after the passing of their mother, Lupe Terrazas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, who live in Tucson, the Midwest, and Texas. Eva, who did not have children, adored her many nieces and nephews whom she considered as her children. She had an amazing memory and could list nearly every niece and nephew's birthday and made it a point to call them on their special day.

Eva had quick wit and deep sense of humor. She was also a woman of great faith and dedication. Her kind words of guidance will be missed by many. She never passed on the opportunity to give her blessings to anyone that came to visit her.
