I adopted dad when he married my mom Louise. He was such a unique, beautiful and loving man, I just couldn’t help but love him like a father. He brought me to the Pima air museum and taught me all about the air “superiority” in wartime. He always fascinated me with stories from his childhood to his service time. When my mom died, we would talk for hours in the evenings until he met Jean who very lovingly took my place. My love, prayers and sympathy go out to all of those who loved this very remarkable man and especially to His “bride” Jean. I will miss him and I know that you will too. Love Bonnie and John Steffens

When dad and my mom Louise visited us in Iowa or we visited Tucson, he and I would get the guitars out and sing old country western and gospel songs together. He asked me if he needed guitar lessons. I told him to just keep playing in his sweet style that he taught himself. He was always so humble about himself and the gifts of different skills God gave him. We will miss him. I have more memories of Dad V than I could share in this space, but a couple come to mind. Like the time in New Hampshire when he rescued me and either Rick or Glynda who had drifted out to sea about 100 yards while floating on one of those huge airplane inner tubes he used to bring home. Mom panicked and he jumped in the water, swam out to reach us and dragged us back to shore. Another memory is when he took Rick and me swimming in a canal in Calexico, Ca. It wasn’t legal and probably not very safe but it was cool and we had fun, until a car came toward us and we had to hide on the bank, in just our underwear, until the car passed. I remember the Sunday drives in NH in the Fall, looking at the colorful folio. I remember many evenings that Dad V would sing and play his favorite country music songs on his guitar for mom, Rick, Glynda and me. I remember a trip he took me on a trip he made across the desert to Calexico and El Centro to see grandmom and granddad V, Aunts Betty and Donna, uncles Vern and Meldon, and cousins Micki, Terri and Jackie. I loved those times! So many more memories I could share!!!

Bill was one of the best men I have ever known. He was generous, kind, patient, and always had a smile on his face; the most positive person I have ever met. I met Bill in 1975 when I started dating Leota's son, Roger. He immediately made me feel welcomed, loved, and accepted. Although I left the family in 1989, he has remained in my heart as a cherished soul who greatly enhanced my life. Every time I saw him after that time he greeted me with a smile and a big hug as if I was still a part of the family. The concept of "stepchild" didn't exist for him. He embraced all his kids, their spouses, and all the grands with love, respect, and generosity. I have so many fond memories of him but two of the "fun fact" recollections are the joy of a simple game of marbles while sitting in a camper and the value of adding just a few sprinkles of salt to a cold beer. Those still bring a smile to my face every time I do them. All of humankind should be a bit more like Bill. My life, and the world is far better having had him in it. My heartfelt condolences to his entire family. May your memories help you navigate through the grief.
