Obituary of Michael Gari

Michael V. Gari was born in Bari, Italy, on September 1, 1931. He emigrated with his family to New York City in 1932. Mike became a U.S. citizen at the age of 2. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY, attending local schools. After graduating from New York University in 1955, Mike joined the U.S. Army. That same year he married his wife of 56 years, Marilou De Tomaso, who survives him. Mike left the Army in 1957 and began a successful career in banking and financial services. He held senior level and executive positions with several banks throughout the country. He was a pioneer in the development of both the credit card and the national ATM network. After retiring, Mike especially enjoyed traveling with Marilou, with their destinations spanning the globe. Mike loved a lively conversation about almost any topic, especially finance, politics or sports. He was a diehard Yankees & Giants fan. In addition to Marilou, Mike is survived by a sister, Grace Venanzini of Brooklyn, NY, as well as a daughter, Melissa Gari Redman, her husband Charles and grandson Michael, all of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where Mike and Marilou once lived. A private burial service will take place on Wednesday, May 30th at 1:00 p.m. at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Arizona. A celebration of Mike's life will be held at Villa Hermosa in Tuscon on Thursday, May 31st at 2:00. A service for Mike will also be held in Cape Elizabeth later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy (PSP) Foundation.
