Obituary of Elmer Smith Carter

Elmer S. Carter, Jr. On October 30, 2012, Elmer S. Carter, Jr. passed away surrounded by his loving wife and family, he left this world with peace, happiness and love, as all who knew him would say these are the traits they always received from him. His smile and twinkle in his eye will be missed by all who knew him. Elmer was born on December 13, 1937 in Valdosta Georgia. He attended school in the Valdosta area and joined the United States Air Force in 1955, where he was stationed at bases in Texas, Washington State, England, Georgia, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Omaha, NE and Tucson, AZ. Retiring from the US Air Force in 1978 after 23 years of active duty, Elmer began a career with the Tucson International Airport Authority (TAA) in the roles of Director of Projects and Director of Commercial Development, he retired from TAA in 2000. Elmer enjoyed working for TAA and was very proud of the airport as it grew to meet the travel needs of the Tucson community. Elmer also was the Founder and Chairman of the TAA Invitational Golf Tournament from 1987 to 1993. Elmer married Mary Jane (Moeller) on July 9, 1960 in Lindy, NE. They met and were married within six months, Elmer loved Mary Jane from the moment he met her and didn't see any reason to wait to get married, and so they were for 52 happy years. Together they raised and loved three children. The family lived in Omaha, NE, Albany, GA, and Puerto Rico and in 1976 made Tucson their home. Elmer enjoyed golfing, reading, movies and TV, and going to the casinos. He loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Elmer's personality was one of a kind; he loved to laugh and tell a good joke. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane; his sons, Mark Carter (Annabel) of Tucson, Todd Carter (Ruth Varner) of Columbus, OH and daughter, Cindy Carter Peske (Derek) of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Savannah Carter, Ryan Peske, Maranda Peske and Aaron Peske; his sister, Doreen (Lynn) Officer; nephew, Ray (Kristin) Officer; niece, Pamela Officer; great- nephews, Donald and Viktor, along with his Moeller in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Jewel Carter and twin brother. In Celebration of Elmer's life a Visitation is scheduled for Monday evening, November 5, 2012 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, 8625 E. Tanque Verde Road.
