Obituary of Franc Brodar

Dr. Franc Brodar passed peacefully at home on November 16, 2012. Dr. Brodar was born on February 23, 1925 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. At the end of World War II, he spent four years in a refugee camp, while waiting for the opportunity to immigrate to the United States. Other countries were taking wartime refugees at the time, but Dr. Brodar wanted specifically to live his life in the United States, and waited for a chance to come to America. While waiting to immigrate, he attended the Medical School at the University of Graz in Austria. After immigrating in 1949, Dr. Brodar attended Bucknell University then Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, earning his M.D. degree in 1957. He became a U.S. citizen in 1955. Following graduation, Dr. Brodar married Elizabeth (Betty) Joan Winter in Philadelphia and moved to the southwest, working for the Public Health Service on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation in White River, AZ until 1960. Dr. Brodar practiced medicine in various locations before moving to Tucson in 1969. After spending two years in an Internal Medicine Residency at Tucson Medical Center, Dr. Brodar opened his private practice of internal medicine in 1971 where he served the community and his many patients until retirement in 1997. His children and grandchildren learned from his wise advice to always “study hard” and he led by example. A lifelong learner, Dr. Brodar pursued his academic and practical interests in botany and languages, growing almost anything and ultimately speaking seven languages. Dr. Brodar and Betty (deceased) had 5 children; Miriam Brodar of Tucson, Marilyn Wheeler (Jim) of Fountain Hills, AZ., Ann Marie Smith (Max) of Tucson, Franc W. Brodar, M.D. (Jennifer) of Phoenix, and William T. Brodar (deceased); 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Dr. Brodar is survived by his brother, Roman Brodar, in Slovenia. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 215 S. Craycroft Rd., 10:30 am, Saturday, November 24, 2012 with a private interment following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington St. Baltimore, Maryland 21201-3443.
