Mary Patricia Riney

Obituary of Mary Patricia Reisz Riney

RINEY, Mary Patricia Reisz was called home on January 17, 2022 surrounded by family.

Patricia (Patty to her friends and family, but unquestionably Patricia to any medical staff she encountered) was born in 1929 to Albert and Ruth Reisz of Owensboro, KY, the 7th of 10 children. She attended Brescia College and, in her words, received her “Mrs.” degree when she met and married her husband of 68 years, J. Carl Riney Jr. in Owensboro. Patty and Carl had four children in Louisville, KY before the family moved to Tucson, AZ where she lived for 59 years.

A dessert aficionado, Patty truly believed ice cream was its own food group and cookies were an excellent breakfast item, provided they were dunked in coffee. Her second love, after all-things sweet, was her life-long passion for basketball. Family and friends alike knew calling to chat in March would mean a distracted conversation as she cheered on her chosen team.

Patty’s love for her children and grandchildren was endless. Like a true Reisz girl, Patty expressed her love of children, grandchildren, friends and family though endless hours in the kitchen frying the best chicken this side of the Mississippi. Her gravy, mashed potatoes, potato salad, and chocolate delight were family favorites and the recipes will never be quite right without her special brand of love added to everything that came out of her kitchen.

Patty is preceded in death by her beloved husband, J. Carl Riney Jr., her son, Dr. Mark Reisz Riney, daughter-in-law, Kathryne Riney, son-in-law, Greg Reesor, parents, Albert and Ruth Reisz, and six siblings.

She is survived by her sisters, Mitzi Reid, Bobby Brown, and Judy Burke, children, Carl Riney, Ruth Reesor, Alan Riney and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 31st at 11AM at St. Francis de Sales Parish (1375 South Camino Seco, Tucson, AZ 85710) masks are requested and will be provided in Patty’s favorite color, purple, followed by interment at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery (2151 South Avenida Los Reyes, Tucson, AZ 85748). A luncheon will follow immediately after the interment at St. Francis de Sales Parish.

The Riney Family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the exceptional staff and caregivers at Desert Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care. Patty was blessed to have been cared for by a team who treated her as if she was their own mother/ grandmother.
