Dear Mr. Mead,
Reflecting on my time in your classroom, I realize now the profound impact you had on my life. You were more than just a teacher; you were a guiding light during a crucial time. Today, as I stumbled upon the news of your passing, I am filled with regret for not expressing my gratitude and apologizing for any shortcomings on my part.
It's heartening to read the countless tributes online, each one a testament to the remarkable person you were. Your dedication, kindness, and unwavering belief in your students were truly admirable qualities that left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing you.
I may not have had the chance to convey my feelings to you directly, but please know that your teachings and your spirit will forever resonate within me. Thank you, Mr. Mead, for being the epitome of excellence and compassion. Your legacy will continue to inspire countless lives, including mine.
With sincere gratitude and fond memories,
Daniel Anderson (Palo Verde Class of 2003)

He was my geometry teacher in 2004 (I think) and he was absolute gold. The kindest, warmest, funniest, most understanding and empathetic teacher I’ve ever had. He was hilarious and made math tolerable, maybe even fun (I hated math, but got an A in his class!)
He was very relaxed and hardly ever got angry or annoyed with even the worst of students. I just wanted to share that, but I’m sure his family already knows!

I met Russ at Palo Verde High School when I became the assistant girl's track coach in the early 80's. Since I knew nothing about coaching track, Russ not only taught me what he knew but took me to every coaching clinic or workshop that was available. He was great! I spent 5 years coaching with him and 30 years as a colleague at PV. We knew each other over many years and many life experiences for both of us. He was a good friend, a great teacher and coach, and has left behind many wonderful memories for those of us who knew him. My dearest condolences to his son, daughter in law, grandkids and brothers. I hope he's enjoying a beer somewhere out there!

I met Russ Mead ("Mr. Mead," "Coach," "Couch") when I participated in track & field at Palo Verde High School, first as an athlete and again as an assistant coach. Coach expected a lot from his athletes in terms of effort, knowing that we were all stronger, faster, and braver than we thought we were. When I was a member of the team, I never remembered the track meet scores. I know we lost quite frequently, but Coach focused on the *real* wins: throwing, running, jumping, laughing at ourselves, and learning--about the sport but also about ourselves. When I worked with him, I always felt valued and trusted to take his lesson plans and...well...run with them.
A funny memory: at practice he often stood in a really wide stance, I suspect especially when he was thinking. A common outfit was a baseball cap, a t-shirt or polo shirt, bright blue polyester gym shorts, and a whistle. When an athlete or a coach said something funny, he would inevitably be looking down toward the ground while he listened, arms folded, and then start bobbing his head and shoulders up and down, chuckling.
Wish I could be there in person to celebrate a wonderful person who was such as strong influence on my personal and professional life.

I met Russ not quite 10 years ago. We bonded over our love of craft beer. Quickly, our friendship grew and I realized how intelligent, thoughtful, steadfast, witty, and caring Russ was. We could debate any subject without anger or akwardness, and spent many hours solving the problems of the world. What I will remember most about Russ are the stories he would tell of a life well lived. From his upbringing, to his career as a teacher, to traveling Europe, he always had a new (or old) adventure to share. He often spoke of coaching his cross country teams, teaching his students, his philosophy of how to educate, and his dedication to his profession. He spoke of his travels abroad and the people he met along the way. He had an affinity for Ireland and Scotland, and he spoke of making friends over a pint or a wee dram of scotch. Vienna, of course, was his favorite, and in the time that I knew him it was his home away from home. Russ also had many, many friends in Tucson. Many of us kept tabs on his travels, always eager to see him again. I always looked forward to catching up with him over a beer when he would return from a trip. While he had many adventures, and many stories, the memories he delighted in the most were of his students, and his family. He spoke lovingly of his brothers, his son, his daughter-in-law, and especially his grandchildren. My condolences to the Mead family. Please know that Russ was loved by so many, and that we grieve with you. He gave so much love to all who were in his life. Russ was one of the best people I have ever known, and I am honored to call him my friend. Godspeed Russ, we love you, always.

Dear Family,
I new Mr. Mead when I was a student at Palo Verde High School. Although he was never my teacher, he was my sister’s Cross Country coach. When I started my teaching career in the math department, Mr. Mead was my colleague and was very supportive. I saw him several times during the years that followed. I know how hard having someone you care about and love die. May you find comfort in your memories of your Dad and Grandfather and know that there is nothing better than a life well lived. Russ Mead had a life well lived!

He was a caring teacher and wonderful coach. He definitely went above and beyond to help his students/athletes. Not only did he tutor me in geometry for free but he also paid for half of my track shoes when I was unable to afford them. He was known to pick up the long distance runners every Saturday and week days during the summer to take us out running at various locations. Sabino canyon and Saguaro National Monument were some of my favorites. He was a teacher/coach who wanted all of us to be successful and would do whatever he could to make that happen. RIP Coach Mead

I never had Mr Mead as a teacher, but was involved with track and cross country. I also remember seeing him always smiling in the halls at Palo Verde High School in the later 70s. I know he touched a lot of student's lives. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and all who knew him.

I knew Russ all my life. I was there at the beginning and I am now here at the end, or what is a new beginning for him. I was aware of all that was in between, and always so proud of him. There are no words to describe how terribly he will be missed as we try to maintain family and traditions without his physical presence. Russ was my younger brother and I will always love him..
