John James {J.J} Richardson

John James Richardson passed away peacefully in his home on July 2 , 2020 at the age of 73 with his life partner Debbie Spears by his side. He was born to Grace and Gladwyn Ricardson in Toledo, Ohio on May 2, 1947 not far from where he graduated Addison High School in Michigan of 1965. He joined the United States Army in August of 1966 where he served in the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in August of 1969. During his service he was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars , a Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ device 60, two Oversea bars and the Marksmen (M14). After his Military service, J.J became a Police Officer of North Plainfield New Jersey in 1972 where he served until 1977. He moved to Tucson, AZ in 1978 where he became a University of Arizona Police Officer and eventually became a Tucson Police Officer in 1979. He retired from TPD in 2007 after 30 years of service. During his tenure as police officer he earned a scarlet shield and congressional recognition from John McCain in Aug of 2005. His next journey was becoming a K9 Security officer in 2010 with a German Shepard named Otto. In his free time John was a proud race horse owner, spent time with his fellow vets at the American Legion and AMVets where he eventually became commander. He was also an avid member of the American Legion Riders and in his latter years he could often be found on his motorcycle or on a golf course. John is preceded by his brothers Ted, Gene, David, Gale and his daughter Sherry Lynn. He is survived by his life partner Debbie, brother Gary, daughters Mary Frances, Chrissy, Kelly and his son John jr. He is also remembered by his extended family Tanya and Thomas and leaves behind over 20 grandchildren. A memorial service and celebration of John’s life will be held at the American Legion at 5485 E 22nd Street, Tucson AZ on November 17, 2020 at 12 PM PST. To all of those that JJ touched in his lifetime, please come and celebrate by sharing stories for all to enjoy. In lieu of flowers the family asks to have a contribution be made in his name to The Fisher House Foundation.
