I am saddened by recently learning of Prof. Wallen's passing. He was the most remarkable mathematician I ever met. His lectures at Stevens Institute of Technology in the 60's were perfections, all done without notes. In the three semesters with him, I learned how to do proofs, under his guidance. I later got my PhD (1976), a childhood goal.

Larry's wife Cotten Hale was my college roommate at UNC in Chapel Hill, and I knew her when we both lived in Hawaii with our families. I will always remember Larry playing the violin in their kitchen. He and Cotten had a strong partnership, both unique people and both mathematicians. My father worked as an engineer at Bell Labs when they met.

Dear Mrs Salli Wallen and family,
I was very sad to learn of Prof Larry J. Wallen’s passing.
I was blessed to be the first Doctoral student of Professor Wallen. He taught me deep Mathematical theories and how to present them and enjoy them. His diverse Lectures were perfect gems. I always thought of him when I prepared to present my own work: what I learned from him enabled me to enjoy a unique career involving applied Math in communications research that spanned my 50 years at Bell Labs.
Larry would surprise me with his expert talents. This included playing the violin, birdwatching, standing on one hand and hand ball among many others. I am sure you have countless wonderful memories with him.
Sincerely,
Gerard Foschini [email protected]
