It is truly a privilege to have known Uncle Fred during the 22 years since I joined his extended family by marrying his niece Diana. I've always looked up to him and to the impact that his sacrificial life has had on so many people -- an impact that will continue for decades to come in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and all those who come to know them.
On the phone two years ago, he helped my teenage daughter Nadia to prepare for an important exam in physics. She now says that her questions were unnecessarily complicated, and she was struck by his generosity and patience in answering them. In addition to his intellect, what she enjoyed most was that he shared her amazement at how the universe works.
