Obituary of Alvin Berg

ALVIN AXEL BERG

On Saturday Oct 20, 2018, Al (age 90) went home to be with his Lord.  He will be forever remembered by Darlene, his loving wife of 66 years, and their children Debbie (Mike) and Carl (Sonnie). He will also be missed by his grandchildren Chris (Hannah), Josh (Mallory), Justin (Marissa), Ashley (Kyle), and Haley.   Great-grandchildren Noelle, Micah, Audrey, Payson, Maren, Carmen and Kecera brought much joy to his life, and he also dearly loved his special nieces, nephews, extended family and treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother Ken Berg and brother-in- law Roy Johnson.

The oldest of 2 boys, Al was born to Axel and Gladys Berg on January 10, 1928 in Minneapolis MN. After high school, he was proud to join the US Army and spent time at Vint Hill Farm Station where Russian transmissions were decoded before being assigned to Military Police. One of his favorite memories and biggest honors was serving as guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC.  Along with his son, he recently returned to visit the DC memorials with the Southern Arizona Honor Flight.

Following his discharge, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis where he met a lifelong friend—they always had fun together and were happy when both were hired by IBM. When his buddy and co-worker got married, Al was chosen as Best Man. It was here that he met the love of his life! As Best Man, he was smitten with the lovely maid of honor…. the bride’s cousin.  She caught the bride’s bouquet and he proposed a month later.

A talented craftsman, Al was known for his quality work, extensive collection of tools, and he always had a project going on. He had a strong work-ethic and liked using his skills to help family and friends. Al had a great sense of humor and could be quite a character! Fun family times were also spent on the boat or traveling.

In all, Al spent 37 years with IBM in Chicago, St Paul, then Greencastle IN and Tucson AZ.   His co-workers even nick-named him “YODA” because of his memory and ability to recall and teach detailed information to others.

He was proud of his Swedish heritage and as a 1st generation American had many extended family members in Sweden. He remained active for many years in both local and state levels of the VASA Order of America.

Al always loved kids and seeing the smiles on faces of young children made him so happy. He was a “substitute grandfather” to several who always knew he’d have a piece of candy in his pocket just for them.

Please join us on Sunday Nov 4, 2018 at 3pm as we gather to celebrate a life well-lived and his graduation to Glory. Christ Community Church, 530 Pantano Rd, Tucson AZ
