Col. Georgia Mildred Thomas, USAF, Ret.
Formally a long time resident of Tucson, Arizona passed away at Somerford Senior Living in Frederick, Md. on September 17, 2018. Col. Thomas was born in Oak Hill, W. Va. on March 8, 1922. She is survived by a niece, Dr. Patricia Isaccson (Harvey) of Lady Lake, Florida, a nephew, Charles Thomas (Cindy) of Middletown, Maryland and many extended nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin Grant and Emma Bell Poteet Thomas and her brother, Charles Wilson Thomas.
After graduating from nursing school at Laird Memorial Hospital in Montgomery W.Va., she attended graduate school at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. In 1942 she began her career at Barnes Hospital as an Operating Room Nurse. In 1952, she decided that she would like to serve her country by joining the United States Air Force. Her first assignment was in Ellington, Texas. In 1953, she attended Baylor University School of Anesthesiology & Administration in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. During the timeframe from 1953 until retiring in 1980, she rose to the rank of Colonel and had served in Turkey, Spain, Tripoli, North Africa, France, England and Germany. She also served at Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico; Moody AFB; Georgia; Langley AFB; Virginia; and Dover, Delaware. She served and retired from Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona in 1980.
In her retirement, Col Thomas enjoyed cruising in various parts of the world, she was an accomplished needlepoint artist and enjoyed reading and playing the piano and organ.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, 2018 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. at Bring’s Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway. Services will be held on September 26, 2018 with Monsignor Tom Cahalane at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S Kolb Rd. , Tucson, Az. at 10: a.m. Donations in honor of Col. Thomas can be made to Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church.
