Obituary of Francine E. Shacter

Francine E. Shacter (Age 90)

Francine Shacter, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Bethesda and Highland, MD, died peacefully on June 14, 2018. Francine was born in Los Angeles, CA, graduated from Hollywood High School, and briefly attended UCLA, before marrying and raising four children. Years later, in the middle of life, while working full time, she obtained her BA from Goddard College, Plainfield, VT. Her work experience extended from owning and operating her own business as a fashion designer and seamstress, to a distinguished career as an administrator at the US Census Bureau and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

One of her many passions was Democratic Party politics, serving as a precinct chair, running for Register of Wills, and culminating in her primary run for US Representative for the 8th Congressional District of Arizona in 2006. Francine was a noted dog breeder and trainer, always willing to share her expertise with friend and stranger. Of her many other accomplishments, Francine was a craft artist, including macramé, weaving, and quilting, and a musician, playing both the harp and the recorder.

She is survived by her loving children, Michael, Jeffrey, and Emily, her daughter-in-law Beth Wheeler, and her adored grandchildren Gabriel and Matai. Her loving daughter Deborah died four years ago.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, on Tuesday June 19, at Villa Hermosa, 6300 E. Speedway, Tucson, AZ. 85710. Donations in Francine’s memory can be made to the ACLU, the Arizona Democratic Party, or The Drawing Studio in Tucson.
